Is a Pre-Apprenticeship Worth It?

Embarking on an electrical pre-apprenticeship is a valuable step into the industry. It lays a solid foundation for your future career, offering both theoretical knowledge and practical skills. You'll gain firsthand experience of the industry and develop essential safety skills. Overall, it’s an excellent opportunity to start your career journey.

What Does an Electrical Apprenticeship Involve?

An electrical apprenticeship is a comprehensive program lasting about 4 years, culminating in practical skills, knowledge, and hands-on experience. It includes paid work under the guidance of experienced electricians and structured training with a registered provider. At CET, for instance, classes run from 8 am to 4 pm, Monday to Friday, preparing you for the early starts and diverse working conditions typical in this field.

Learning During the Apprenticeship

CET offers various pathways catering to different aspects of the electrical industry, such as Data and Voice Communication, Electro-technology Training, and Electrical Fitting. Our courses are designed to provide you with a broad range of industry-relevant knowledge and skills.

The Challenges and Rewards of Being an Apprentice

While challenging, an electrical apprenticeship is immensely rewarding. It involves acquiring technical knowledge and developing new skills continuously. If you’re physically fit, possess good motor skills, enjoy problem-solving, and are a hands-on learner, you’re well-prepared for this journey.

Preparing for Your Apprenticeship

Although specific preparation isn’t mandatory, certain traits like responsibility, communication skills, teamwork, and professionalism are often sought by employers. A pre-apprenticeship is the best way to prepare, equipping you with essential knowledge and skills.

Earnings as a 1st-Year Apprentice

Apprentices earn while they learn, although initial wages are modest. Despite the lower starting pay, the unique opportunity to earn and learn simultaneously is invaluable. As a qualified electrician, the potential salary range in WA, for example, can be between $100k to $150k annually.

Post-Apprenticeship Pathways

After completing your apprenticeship, you’ll need to apply for a licence to work independently. Many apprentices receive job offers from their supervisors, impressed by their skill and work ethic. Alternatively, you can explore opportunities through recruitment networks, websites, or direct company applications.
