Red Plate. One Mate:

From the 1st of December 2024, red P-plate drivers are now restricted to carry only one passenger at all times. This law is aimed to reduce deaths and serious injuries on Western Australian Roads due to high numbers of fatal crashes involving novice drivers in recent years.

Exemptions:

There are three exemptions to passenger limits in this new law, they include:

  • Experienced supervisors: Additional passengers are permitted to be in the vehicle by a supervisor who has had their full C-class driver’s license for at least 4 years
  • Immediate Family Members: Immediate family members are exempt from this restriction
  • Work-Related Travel: Additional passengers can be in the vehicle for work related purposes, but the driver must carry a letter signed by their employer to confirm the requirement at all times.

Penalties for Non-Compliance:

There are penalties that will apply to this new law. Any P-plate drivers not following the one-passenger restriction will receive the following penalties:

  • Fine: $200 fine
