What's The Difference Between Level 2 and Level 1 Electricians?

The profession of an electrician is diverse and requires a specific set of skills and qualifications, which are categorised into levels in many parts of the world.

Understanding the differences between Level 1 and Level 2 electricians is crucial for those requiring electrical services and for individuals aspiring to pursue a career in this field. This article will clarify these levels, their associated qualifications, and services, and address the unique scenario here in Western Australia.

The Western Australia Context

So, what is the difference between level 2 and level 1 electricians?

Put simply, in Western Australia, distinctions between Level 1 and Level 2 electricians do not formally exist. Electricians can pursue additional training to expand their scope of work and qualify for performing more specialised tasks. This unique approach allows electricians in WA to gain qualifications in specific areas of work, enhancing their skill set and service offerings without specific "level" classifications.

In Australia, the concept of Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3 electricians is more commonly associated with the Accredited Service Provider (ASP) scheme in New South Wales (NSW), which allows electricians to work on or near the network infrastructure owned by the state's electricity distributors.

This scheme categorises electricians based on the complexity of the work they are authorised to perform on the electrical network, ranging from basic connections (Level 1) to complex installations and design work (Levels 2 and 3).

Defining Level 1 and Level 2 Electricians

Remember this is associated with the Accredited Service Provider (ASP) scheme in New South Wales (NSW) and doesn't apply if you're living in Western Australia.

Level 1 Electricians:

  • Focus on general electrical work, including installations, maintenance, and repairs within residential and commercial properties.
  • Complete an apprenticeship combining practical experience with theoretical learning.

Level 2 Electricians:

  • Have undergone additional training to perform specialised tasks such as working with the electricity supply network, handling disconnections/reconnections, and managing service lines.
  • Undertake further education and obtain certifications for managing complex tasks involving the electricity supply network.

Services Offered

Level 1 Electricians

  • Installation and maintenance of electrical systems.
  • Repairs, troubleshooting.
  • Lighting installations.
  • Safety inspections, compliance checks.

Level 2 Electricians

  • Disconnection/reconnection to the electrical network.
  • Installation, repair, maintenance of service lines (overhead/underground).
  • Metering services, adjustments.
  • Managing private power poles, advanced connections.

Understanding Electrical Systems and Supply

While both levels are crucial for electrical systems' functioning, Level 2 electricians are trained for tasks involving direct interaction with the electricity supply network to ensure safety and compliance in complex scenarios.

Regulations and Compliance

Electricians globally must comply with safety standards. In regions with Level distinctions, each level adheres to different regulatory frameworks. In WA, despite no formal levels, high standards ensure safe electrical work.
